| Father Stanley Rother, a missionary priest from Oklahoma, has been declared a martyr for the faith (December 2016) and was beatified by Pope Francis (September 2017). He served and lived with the Tz’utujil Maya people of Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala, from 1968 until his assassination on July 28, 1981. We propose to fill in an important part of the picture of Blessed Stanley’s life. This project supports the writing of a memoir by someone who worked closely with the martyr. Others have written books about Rother, but none with a Mayan voice. Juan Ajtzip, a Tz’utujil community leader and close coworker with Father Stanley, will be that voice. Guided by his deep sense of pastoral vocation, Rother defended the dignity of the Tz’utujil after centuries of racism and repression, and inspired Mayan community leaders to launch their own social initiatives. This book will be a responsible hagiography aimed at motivating both local Mayas and others beyond Guatemala to carry Rother’s legacy forward. We intend to publish both in Spanish and in English. Sponsorships and donations will help to subsidize publication in Guatemala, and thus ensure that the price of the book is within reach for local readers. | El padre Stanley Rother, sacerdote misionero de Oklahoma, fue declarado mártir de la fe en diciembre 2016 y beatificado por el Papa Francisco en septiembre 2017.
